According to multiple sources, Chelsea are close to completing the transfers of Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Danny Welbeck from Brighton. Blues boss Xabi Alonso is believed to be looking to add experience and leadership to his team, and these two players have made a total of 843 Premier League appearances between them to date.
Even though his contract has a year left to run, Henderson will apparently be allowed to leave Brentford as a free agent to join Chelsea, which he is keen to do. The 36-year-old midfielder, who captained Liverpool for eight years and lifted almost every trophy club football has to offer, was a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England for the World Cup, but he played only six minutes against Panama before picking up a bizarre arm injury.
Meanwhile, it’s a little more complicated with Welbeck, who is also interested in making the move to Stamford Bridge. The 35-year-old striker also has a year left on his contract, but Brighton will not agree to let him leave without compensation, so a transfer fee for his services will need to be agreed. Back in May, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said Welbeck also deserved a place in the England squad, but competing against the likes of Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney proved too much for him.
Henderson and Welbeck played together for Sunderland back in 2010-11.
